HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-01-14 - AGENDA REPORTS - LACO MTA APPLICATION GRANT (2)CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: January 14, 1997 City Manal Item to be Rick Putnam SUBJECT: APPLICATION FOR GRANT FUNDS FROM LOS ANGELES COUNTY METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (MTA) FOR BICYCLE STATION DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation and Community Services On October 7, 1996, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) requested letters of interest be submitted by November 8, 1996, from cities who may be interested in establishing bicycle stations in their community. The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services responded with the requested information on November 6, 1996. At this time, there were no specific funds available or set aside by the MTA to construct these facilities. As a result of the interest shown from local agencies, MTA will be including "Bicycle Stations" as a part of their Competitive Grant Funding program during the next Call for Projects application cycle. A bicycle station helps promote bicycle commuting by providing a bicycle storage and repair shop, showers, lockers, and changing rooms, as well as food concessions. The letter of interest prepared for MTA reviewed the Chuck Pontius Commuter Rail Trail, the Santa Clara River Trail, and the South Fork Trail connections to the Santa Clarita Soledad Canyon Road Metrolink Station. If the City is a successful applicant for Bicycle Station Funding, we will be submitting to the City Council for approval a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) from MTA covering the grant funding. We will also be submitting for Council consideration the use of an operation agreement for the Bike Station once we have an approved draft from the City Attorney. Authorize the City Manager to sign all required documents for the Bike Station application for grant funds to Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
