HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-11 - AGENDA REPORTS - LACO TOBACCO CONTROL (2)City Manager Apprc Item to be presented Adele Macpherson CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: February 11, 1997 SUBJECT: LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES TOBACCO CONTROL SERVICE PROGRAM GRANT DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, & Community Services On November 1, 1996, the City of Santa Clarita submitted a proposal to the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services for a Tobacco Control Services Program Grant. Funding will be used to implement a community outreach and education project entitled the "Santa Clarita Tobacco Prevention Program." The goals of this program are to 1) provide information to the community regarding the risks of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (SPS) in order to facilitate behavioral change in relation to smoking cessation and reducing exposure to ETS; and 2) provide business owners with skills and information to comply with local, state, and federal tobacco control laws that reduce exposure to ETS in the workplace. City staff is working in collaboration with local branches of the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation to develop and implement programs and activities to meet the objectives of this grant. The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is scheduled to approve the Tobacco Control Service Program Grant Contracts on February 4, 1997. Upon approval, the City of Santa Clarita will receive $79,764 in grant funds for the Santa Clarita Tobacco Awareness Prevention Program. This grant is for a twelve month period, beginning in February 1997, with the possibility of continued future funding. rMWOMSMIAWORI Staff recommends that the City Council: 1) approve the contract accepting the $79,764 grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services; 2) establish estimated revenues in the Miscellaneous Grants Fund to account number 453-5054; 3) appropriate $5,000 to account number 7444-7011 for administration and $74,764 to account 7444-8001; and 4) authorize the City Manager or designee, to execute any contracts, agreements or change orders arising out of this program.
