TOBACCO CONTROL SERVICE PROGRAM GRANT
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, & Community Services
On November 1, 1996, the City of Santa Clarita submitted a proposal to the County of Los Angeles Department
of Health Services for a Tobacco Control Services Program Grant. Funding will be used to implement a
community outreach and education project entitled the "Santa Clarita Tobacco Prevention Program." The goals
of this program are to 1) provide information to the community regarding the risks of Environmental Tobacco
Smoke (SPS) in order to facilitate behavioral change in relation to smoking cessation and reducing exposure to
ETS; and 2) provide business owners with skills and information to comply with local, state, and federal tobacco
control laws that reduce exposure to ETS in the workplace. City staff is working in collaboration with local
branches of the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health
Foundation to develop and implement programs and activities to meet the objectives of this grant.
The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is scheduled to approve the Tobacco Control Service Program
Grant Contracts on February 4, 1997. Upon approval, the City of Santa Clarita will receive $79,764 in grant
funds for the Santa Clarita Tobacco Awareness Prevention Program. This grant is for a twelve month period,
beginning in February 1997, with the possibility of continued future funding.
