SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE
NEWHALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AUDITORIUM COMMUNITY
CENTER AND PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation and Community Services
City staff has been working with community arts and cultural organizations over the past year
to develop a City-wide cultural and performing arts master plan. Participation in this effort has
been open to any interested organization, and has included the SCV Arts Council, the Canyon
Theatre Guild, the SCV Repertory Theater, the Theater Arts for Children, the Santa Clarita
Ballet Company, the SCV Youth Orchestra, the Symphony of the Canyons, the SCV Arts
Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Newhall School District, and others.
As an outgrowth of this effort, and in recognition of the shortage of performing arts space in the
community, the Theater Arts for Children, the Repertory Theater, the Newhall School District
and the City are exploring the restoration of the Newhall Elementary School Auditorium as such
a site.
The actual cost of restoring this facility would be primarily dependent on private fundraising
efforts and grants. To assist in the fundraising it is felt that City endorsement by use of the
City's name and influence in contacting potential supporters is critical.
Therefore, staff, with assistance from the City Attorney, has prepared for City Council
consideration a Resolution outlining the City's role and responsibility in the endeavor.
There would be no fiscal impact to.the City as a result of City Council adoption of the
Resolution.
