A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA ENDORSING
AND URGING CONGRESS TO FUND THE
ISTEA REAUTHORIZATION REQUESTS OF LOS ANGELES
MUNICIPAL TRANSIT OPERATORS COALITION
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita has adopted a resolution supporting the
reauthorization of ISTEA and several specific Santa Clarita projects, now being considered by
Congress; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita has adopted a resolution supporting the
reauthorization of ISTEA and several specific MTA projects, now being considered by Congress;
and
WJIEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita recognizes the critical role that public transit plays
in the economic and social well-being of the cities in Los Angeles County, allowing residents,
employees and visitors to travel throughout the county and its cities to reach employment,
school, stores, businesses, recreation, and entertainment outlets, and other activity centers; and
WHEREAS, municipal transit operators in the county play a critical role in meeting the
demand for public transit, serving over 82 million trips annually throughout the county with
fleets of over 900 buses, and meeting this need cost-effectively; and
WHEREAS, several of these municipal operators have requested funding through the
reauthorization of ISTEA for four projects so that they can continue to provide needed transit
services and in some cases expand service to meet the growing demand and convert their fleets
to clean fuel vehicles, including the installation of clean fuel fueling facilities. These requests
include (1) a request of the Los Angeles Municipal Transit Operators Coalition (LAMTOC,
including Commerce Municipal Bus Lines, Culver City Municipal Bus Lines, Gardena Municipal
Bus Lines, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Santa Monica
Municipal Bus Lines, and Torrance Transit) for 289 replacement and expansion buses and 3
compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling facilities, (2) a request of Long Beach Transit for 8 buses,
shelters, signage and information kiosks for the Queensway Bay recreation center, (3) a request
from Foothill Transit for 99 CNG/Electric Hybrid replacement buses, and (4) a request from
Santa Clarita Transit for 50 replacement and expansion buses and a
maintenance/administration facility.
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA DOES
RESOLVE, AS FOLLOWS:
To endorse and urge Congress to fund the ISTEA reauthorization requests of LAMTOC,
Long Beach Transit, Foothill Transit and Santa Clarita Transit so they may continue and
expand their services to improve mobility in our cities; to facilitate the ability of persons to
reach employment, goods and services, and to continue to improve air quality in our region.
