SUBJECT: CHANGE ORDER TO PADILLA PAVING FOR EXTENDED
PROJECT LIMITS - WEST NEWHALL IMPROVEMENTS,
PHASE 2, PROJECT NO. S2034

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a change order for the
West Newhall Improvements, Phase 2, Project No. 52034, to Padilla Paving Company in
the amount of $34,000.00. Sufficient funds have been budgeted in Account
No. 52034001 for this work.
BACKGROUND
On June 10, 1997; the City Council approved the award of a contract to Padilla Paving
Company for the West Newhall Improvements, Phase 2, Project No. 52034, in the
amount of $418,041.55, and authorized a 10 percent contingency. This project installed
curb and gutter, sidewalk, and reconstructed streets in the area. The limits of this
project are shown on Exhibit `.`A," Project Location Map.
To accommodate the proposed street improvements, the Gas Company relocated a
22 -inch high-pressure gas line on Walnut Street and on 11th Street east of
Walnut Street. The limits of the gas line relocation extended beyond the limits of the
street improvement project, specifically at 11th Street east of Walnut Street.
The gas line relocation required extensive excavation of the street. To reduce
continuing impact of construction to the area residents, staff extended.the limits of the
street improvement project to this portion of 11th Street. This avoided the need to
excavate the street again at a later date for the installation of street improvements.'
The installation of street improvements on 11th Street was originally scheduled for
completion during the next phase of the West Newhall Improvement Projects. However,
the work was completed as part of the current project, utilizing budget from the next
phase.

FISCAL IMPACT
The cost. to extend the limits of the street improvements on 11th Street from
Walnut Street to the alley just west of Spruce Street is $34,000.00. Sufficient funds
have been budgeted in Account No. S2034001 for this work.
