The 1997 Santa Clarita Marathon was a great success. As the title sponsor for the event, the City received broad state and national name exposure. Marathon participants grew 44% from 1996, with 89% of the participants rating the event excellent to very good, and 78% committing to return again in 1998. The Marathon event has become the second major annual tourism event of Santa Clarita along with the Cowboy Poetry Festival. Last year City Council approved sponsoring expenditures of $24,000.00 for the 1997 Marathon event which where used to reimburse both the Sheriffs Department and City Field Services costs associated with the event for the 1997 Marathon event. For the 1998 Marathon, $19,000.00 is being requested to reimburse the same public service levels . These cost savings represent a better reimbursement of staffing deployment on the part of both the Sheriffs and City Field Services. Investigate ways to further reduce Sheriffs Department and City Field Services expenses in servicing the Marathon event. p27101 ED Agenda AX4 FISCAL IMPACT Upon City Council approval, $19,000.00 would be included for. the 1998 Santa Clarita Marathon, in the 1998-99 City Budget submittal. The ten -mile race and marathon events totaled 1,079 finishers. • There was a fundamental shift in the mix of local verses outside runners to 16% local and 83% outside runners. • The event drew from 15 states, including Alaska and Florida, and three countries, including Japan and the United Kingdom. • Marathon participants who stayed overnight in hotels totaled 41%. • The event was rated excellent to very good by 89% of the participants. • The participants who confirmed that they intend to return to the event in 1998 were 78%. This represents an extremely strong return -customer base for the event. • The average expenditure of each marathon participant was $139.27. The 1997 event had an estimated $643,732.78 positive impact on the Santa Clarita economy. «m,0auvhWa..ku
