STUDENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM REPORT
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Direct staff as City Council deems appropriate.
BACKGROUND
Since 1991, the Student Partnership Program has offered high school students an
opportunity to continue their education when they have been unsuccessful in a traditional
high school setting. This program operates out of the old Bowman school site in Canyon
Country. The program's success is ensured through the partnership between the City of
Santa Clarita, the William S. Hart Union School District, Los Angeles County Office of
Education, and other Santa Clarita Valley community agencies. The City Council approved
a budget of $50,000 for this year's program to help with the cost of school supplies for the
students and maintenance of the facility. There is also funding for a licensed counselor to
be on site with the students.
The Student Partnership Program opens a door for at -risk youth to participate in a service -
learning, educational model. The ultimate goal of the program is to have the students
return to the traditional educational setting and achieve academic and personal success. In
1998, less than 1% of students were absent on any given day and 98% improved their
overall grades by at least one grade level in one semester. Over one-half of the Student
Partnership Program students returned to the traditional school setting in two semesters
or less.
The Student Partnership Program empowers students, encouraging them to believe in
themselves and to become productive members of society.
