INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and Councilmembers
FROM: George A. Caravalho, City Manager
/f/t'
DATE: October 6, 1998
SUBJECT: SUSTAINABILITY
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Receive staff report and presentation and discuss the City and community's role to
work toward sustainability.
BACKGROUND
Several months ago members of the City Council and Planning Commission voiced
an interest in "green building" efforts and in the concept of sustainability. Several
members attended a conference in Seattle and others visited the green building in
San Diego. In response to this interest, staff prepared a reading packet for your
perusal over the summer and scheduled a study session.
The concept of sustainability is complex. It touches every aspect of our lives. The
goal of sustainability is to preserve the quality of life we enjoy today for future
generations. This appears to be a worthy goal, but how does it happen? What can
we do to make a difference?
Many cities, businesses and individuals across the nation and around the world are
taking concrete steps to achieve this goal. We already do many things that promote
sustainability. There is more we can do. There is also more the community can do.
It takes everyone doing his or her small part to make a big difference.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
No alternative action identified by staff.
FISCAL IMPACT
None.
