Item 1 SANTA CLARITA VALLEY RESOURCE CENTER
Community Services Superintendent Macpherson explained that a task force
was created in December, 1996 to research the perceived needs of the non-profit
community. The results of the study confirmed the need for a Santa Clarita
Valley Resource Center that could provide support and assistance to local non-
profit organizations.
Jaime Kennedy representing the United Way, Jill Harper representing the
American Cancer Society, Sue Neiberger representing the PTA, and Carol
Maglione representing Newhall Land and Farm, the Santa Clarita Valley
Repertory Theatre and other groups, addressed the Council in support of the
Center.
Public Participation: There was none.
Council discussion and concerns: contacting local businesses to encourage a
program where the businesses would offer time off for employees to volunteer;
providing a list of resources within the community to anyone interested; issuing
pins in recognition of the numbers of hours volunteers put in; and having
someone to coordinate donated items.
Council accepted the report for informational purposes and directed staff to
complete the funding proposal for the City's in-kind facility match to United
Way.
City Manager Caravalho indicated an item would be placed on a future Council
agenda for formal approval of the Resource Center.
Public Participation: There was none.
Mayor Heidt called for general Public Participation; there was none.
Mayor Heidt adjourned the meeting at 7:42 p.m.
