BACKGROUND On January 12, 1999, the City of Santa Clarita's Redevelopment Agency approved guidelines and criteria for the $250,000 Arts District Matching Grant and directed staff to convene a peer review panel to recommend grantees. A peer review panel consisting of one representative from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Santa Clarita Arts Alliance, the Newhall Redevelopment Committee, the City of Santa Clarita, and Young Audiences, Inc., reviewed applications for consideration of funding. The City received two (2) proposals, one from the Canyon Theater Guild for $250,000 and one from the Santa Clarita Repertory Theater for $90,000, totaling $340,000 in grant requests. On February 23, 1999, the Review Committee evaluated the proposals and provided recommendations on grant awards for both agencies to be funded. Based on the 'criteria and the matching fund requirement approved by the Redevelopment Agency, the grant committee recommended funding in the following amounts: Santa Clarita Repertory Theater $90,000 and Canyon Theater Guild $160,000. The Grant Committee recommended that Canyon Theater Guilds' award be contingent upon securing a lease or property purchase in the downtown Newhall Special Standards District and completing a revised project budget within six months of grant award notification.
