RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the lease agreements and authorize the City Manager, or his

BACKGROUND
In 1997, the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Sheriffs Station partnered to
develop the Community Interaction Team (CIT). The team was based in Newhall for the
first year and Part 1 crimes decreased and community participation increased in working
together to improve quality of life issues.
In 1998, grant funds facilitated the CIT restructuring to consist of one sergeant and four
deputies. The team focus moved to the Canyon Country area and was based out of North
Oaks Park. During the first year of operation in Canyon Country, the team has conducted
three community clean-ups, improved quality of life issues, and impacted crime.
In the spring 1999, the City received a Community -Oriented Policing Grant to fund a
deputy to address quality of life issues in Canyon Country. Dick Darling, Vice President of
Concept Centers, LP, builders of the Soledad Entertainment Center, offered a storefront for
use by the Sheriffs Department and the City of Santa Clarita. Staff has worked with
Mr. Darling to secure a three-year lease, free of charge.
Approval of the following lease agreements will result in the opening of a Sheriffs
Substation at 18828 Soledad Canyon Road in the community of Canyon Country:
• Agreement between City of Santa Clarita and the County of Los Angeles
• Agreement between City of Santa Clarita and Concept Centers, LP
The Canyon Country Sheriffs Storefront will provide services to the east side of the City,
improving access for citizens and serve as the base for the Sheriffs Volunteer Bike Patrol.
Community leaders, the Sheriffs Department, and staff are currently planning the grand
opening of the Canyon Country Sheriffs Storefront on Saturday, August 28, 1999, from
10:00-11:00 a.m.
