SUBJECT: ADOPTION OF A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING SUBMITTAL OF AN
APPLICATION TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND
FIRE PROTECTION FOR GRANT FUNDS UNDER THE TREES FOR
THE MILLENNIUM INITIATIVE.
DEPARTMENT: Field Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Adopt a resolution, authorizing the City Manager to submit an application to the State of
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for funding under the Trees for the
Millennium Initiative. Direct the City Manager, if selected for funding, to enter into agreements
with the State necessary to participate in the Initiative.
BACKGROUND
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has made funds available under the
new "Trees for the Millennium" program. This program is designed to assist with the growth of
urban forests by awarding funds for eligible tree planting and early critical tree care projects.
City staff has identified many sites Citywide that could be eligible for Trees for the Millennium
program funding, including over 200 sites in the West Newhall area of the City. If the grant
application is successful, the trees planted by this project will greatly enhance the Section 108
Phase of the West Newhall curb, gutter and sidewalk program. This program allows staff to plant
trees in many areas, and provides an excellent opportunity for beautification of the City. Staff
anticipates support from community groups in the application process, the project planning
phase, and assistance with the implementation of the project.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Do not submit an application to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for the
Trees for the Millennium program.

involvement. The grant is administered on a reimbursement basis. There is no match
requirement for this grant, however, the City will be required to provide all long term
