BACKGROUND The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has made funds available under the new "Trees for the Millennium" program. This program is designed to assist with the growth of urban forests by awarding funds for eligible tree planting and early critical tree care projects. City staff has identified many sites Citywide that could be eligible for Trees for the Millennium program funding, including over 200 sites in the West Newhall area of the City. If the grant application is successful, the trees planted by this project will greatly enhance the Section 108 Phase of the West Newhall curb, gutter and sidewalk program. This program allows staff to plant trees in many areas, and provides an excellent opportunity for beautification of the City. Staff anticipates support from community groups in the application process, the project planning phase, and assistance with the implementation of the project.
