HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-12-14 - AGENDA REPORTS - IMPROV SPORTS COMPLEX BLDG 3 (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT SUBSEQUENT NEED ITEM DATE: December 14, 1999 City Manager Item to behfresented by: Rick Putnam SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO PROCEED WITH TEMPORARY INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SANTA CLARITA SPORTS COMPLEX - BUILDING #3 DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council authorize staff to proceed with temporary infrastructure improvements to Building #3 at the Santa Clarita Sport Complex. City Council appropriate $100,000 from Contingency Account No. 1240-7410 for temporary infrastructure improvements to Building #3 at the Santa Clarita Sport Complex, Account No. F3008001-8001. BACKGROUND The Santa Clarita Sports complex held its grand opening in December of 1998. With the addition of the new basketball facility, the City was able to accommodate many youth that were on a wait list for the 1999 basketball season. However, the City is again facing a serious lack of playing and practice space for its indoor youth basketball league. Staff has been working with the school districts in an effort to share school facility use, but the demand for space still far exceeds the supply. With the recent vacancy of Building #3 by Merle Norman, staff embarked on an effort to determine costs associated with converting this empty warehouse to a temporary use facility for basketball. It was determined that upgrades and repairs necessary to make it functional for practice and play would be no more than $100,000. Necessary repairs and upgrades include painting, flooring, electrical work and portable restrooms. The opportunity to convert the warehouse to useable recreation space was brought to staffs attention after the posting of the December 14, 1999, agenda. Staff believes it is imperative that this item be brought before Council at December 14 meeting. If approved, work would need to begin immediately in order to have the facility available for the upcoming January basketball season. ALTERNATIVE ACTION Appropriate a different amount for infrastructure improvements to Building #3 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex. Do not authorize temporary infrastructure improvements to Santa Clarita Sports Complex. FISCAL IMPACT Funds for this project are being requested from the City Council Contingency Account.
