—/&
Item to be presented by: Mike Haviland
DATE: July 13, 1999
SUBJECT: COMPETITION FOR A LADIES PROFESSIONAL GOLF
ASSOCIATION (LPGA) EVENT
DEPARTMENT: City Manager/Economic Development
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Authorize the City Manager to negotiate expenditures up to $100,000 to be used for
promotion, provision of City services and fee waivers, in conjunction with a February, 2000
LPGA event to be held at the Valencia Country Club.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita has been approached to compete for selection as a host site for the
LPGA to be held in February, 2000. The other cities competing for the LPGA event are
Simi Valley, La Habra and Yorba Linda.
The City selected as the location for the event will be judged in part by their support and
interest in hosting the event. In recognition of the potential economic impacts and the
positive opportunity to promote the Santa Clarita name and identity, it is recommended
that the City Manager negotiate on behalf of the City a $100,000 package of City services to
support the LPGA being located in Santa Clarita. The service would include: promotion,
transportation, traffic control, security and waiving City permits.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
1. Do not authorize funds to pursue LPGA event.
2. Other direction as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The City would spend up to $100,000 in hosting the LPGA event, but would recoup
expenses in economic expenditures resulting from visitors attending the event, and the
positive public relations value of events to Santa Clarita.
