HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-12-07 - AGENDA REPORTS - MCBEAN PKWY STRIPING (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA
INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Darcy and Members of the City Council
FROM: George A. Caravalho, City Manager
//
DATE: December 7, 1999
SUBJECT: MCBEAN PARKWAY SIX -LANE STRIPING
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council receive staff presentation and provide comments and direction to staff for
implementation of this potential project.
BACKGROUND
McBean Parkway is a major six -lane arterial in the City's General Plan Circulation
Element. Although the roadway has adequate width for six -lanes, it is currently striped for
only four lanes and no on -street parking. Several approved projects in the Santa Clarita
Valley have been conditioned to pay for all associated improvements necessary to stripe
McBean Parkway to six travel lanes between Interstate 5 and Valencia Boulevard. For this
purpose, an engineering firm with traffic safety and expert witness expertise was selected
to prepare an analysis of the engineering and safety issues that must be addressed if this
roadway were to be modified to accommodate six through travel lanes. The study was
completed to address the following four major issues:
1. Existing Conformance with Recognized Design/Safety Parameters
2. Provision and Alternatives for Six Through Travel Lanes
3. Provision of a Continuous Sidewalk along the Corridor
4. Need for New Traffic Signals and Modification to Several Existing Signals
The purpose of this item is for staff and the consultant to present the topic to the City
Council, outline the constraints to accomplish six -lanes, and provide potential alternatives
that would need to be considered if this proposal is pursued.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
All associated improvements will be done by others. There is no fiscal impact to the City.
ATTACHMENTS
