SUBJECT: UPDATE ON MEDIAONE AND TIME WARNER
COMMUNICATION'S CABLE SYSTEM UPGRADE
DEPARTMENT: Administrative Services
RECOMMEDED ACTION
City Council receive report regarding MediaOne and Time Warner Communication's
system upgrade, and provide staff with direction to continue working with each
cable company in facilitating upgrade activities around the City.
BACKGROUND
Since the early part of April of 1999, MediaOne and Time Warner Communications
Cable Companies have been upgrading their system by rebuilding the cable network
around the City. For the remainder of 1999, and into the year 2000, construction
activity will be taking place in and around Santa Clarita.
A system -wide upgrade to fiber optic technology will be part of the overall
construction taking place. The upgrade involves working in neighborhoods
throughout the day laying new fiber optic lines through the cable network. The
upgrade of the cable system will allow for broadband services such as high-speed
internet access, telephone, and expanded cable and digital compression to offer more
channels of programming. The new services are expected to be rolled out after the
completion of the rebuild on a gradual basis in the years to follow.
The upgrade activities are taking place on a neighborhood -by -neighborhood basis, as
well as near commercial areas. Residents and businesses can expect to see
construction crews around the City throughout the year. However, as a result of
resident and business concerns about disruption in traffic on Lyons Avenue and in
neighborhoods, City staff has asked the cable companies to provide the City Council
with a presentation of information pertaining to the upgrade and also provide
information addressing residents' concerns.
