SUBJECT: CITY SPONSORSHIP OF THE MIKE JOHNSON 5K RUN/WALK
DEPARTMENT:. City Manager's Office
City Council approve sponsorship of the Mike Johnson 5K Run/Walk, and authorize the City
Manager to work with event organizers to determine the appropriate type and level of
sponsorship for this event.
BACKGROUND
In June 1997, then City employee Mike Johnson was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a disease that causes
progressive loss of nervous control of voluntary muscles because of destruction of nerve cells in
the brain and spinal cord. ALS affects one out of every 100,000 people, and there is no known
prevention or cure for this disease.
In recent months, Mike's condition has worsened to the point where he can no longer work and
he requires assistance on a 24-hour basis. In an effort to celebrate Mike's life, several of Mike's
coworkers and friends have joined together in an attempt to create the "Mike Johnson 5K
Run/Walk."
The goal of this event is to create community awareness of ALS and to raise $20,000 to offset
the medical expenses that have been incurred by Mike's family as a result of his treatment. The
event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 22, 2000. Efforts to plan the Mike
Johnson 5K Run/Walk extend beyond just his friends and coworkers and will include the
assistance of the Santa Clarita Runners and the Muscular Dystrophy Disease (MDD)
Foundation. Event organizers are working actively to enlist the support of several other local
agencies and companies to support this cause.
The format of this event is envisioned to be similar to the recent American Heart Association's
"Heart Walk." In addition to registering local area runners to take part in this race,
participants will be asked to seek individual monetary pledges to support their efforts on behalf
of Mike and his family. The majority of proceeds raised (through individual runners, pledges,
and individual and corporate sponsorship) will be provided to Mike Johnson. A certain

percentage (to be determined) of the proceeds raised by this event will benefit the MDD
Foundation. It is the intention of event organizers to fund all costs associated with this event
through in-kind support, sponsorships, and out of their own pockets.
If approved by the City Council, it is anticipated that the City's assistance in this event will
encompass in-kind support in the form of staff assistance, advertising and printing costs, and
seed funds to assist in the event's planning.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The fiscal impact of this sponsorship is anticipated to be minimal and is projected to be limited
to City in-kind support and seed funds to assist in the planning of this event.
