SUBJECT: METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (MTA) BOARD OF
DIRECTORS VACANCY
DEPARTMENT: Transportation and Engineering Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Discuss the nomination of a member of the City Council as a candidate for the Metropolitan
Transportation Authority (MTA) Board of Directors vacancy.
BACKGROUND
MTA Director Larry Zarian has announced his resignation from the MTA Board of Directors,
effective April 20, 1999. Mr. Zarian is the MTA representative for the MTA Northern Corridor
Cities, which includes Agoura Hills, Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, La Canada-
Flintridge, Lancaster, Malibu, Palmdale, San Fernando, Westlake Village, and Santa Clarita.
At this point, the City Council has the opportunity to nominate an elected City Council official
as a candidate for the vacancy on the MTA Board of Directors. Nominating a member of the
Santa Clarita City Council to the MTA Board of Directors would be a major step toward
enhancing our City's role in transportation issues of the North County, Antelope Valley, and
Northern Corridor Cities.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Defer nomination of a Santa Clarita City Councilmember for candidacy on the MTA Board of
Directors.
FISCAL IMPACT
None.
