BACKGROUND At the meeting of January 12, 1999, the City Council briefly discussed the nomination of a candidate for the MTA Board of Directors vacancy and decided to continue the discussion to the January 26, 1999 meeting. MTA Director Larry Zarian has announced his resignation from the MTA Board of Directors, effective April 20, 1999. Mr. Zarian is the MTA representative for the MTA Northern Corridor Cities, which includes Agoura Hills, Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, La Canada- Flintridge, Lancaster, Malibu, Palmdale, San Fernando, Westlake Village, and Santa Clarita. At this point, the City Council has the opportunity to nominate an elected City Council official as a candidate for the vacancy on the MTA Board of Directors. Nominating a member of the Santa Clarita City Council to the MTA Board of Directors would be a major step toward enhancing our City's role in transportation issues of the North County, Antelope Valley, and Northern Corridor Cities.
