Pari DATE: October 26, 1999 SUBJECT: CENTURION WAY - ESTABLISHING PASSENGER LOADING/ UNLOADING ZONES AND BUS ONLY ZONE FOR SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT: Transportation & Engineering Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council adopt a resolution establishing two passenger loading/unloading zones and one bus only zone for Saugus High School along the western side of Centurion Way. BACKGROUND In mid-September 1999, Saugus High School contacted City staff requesting that passenger loadinglunloading zones and a bus only zone be established in front of Saugus High School. This was in response to school -related traffic congestion that is currently occurring along Centurion Way during the peak morning and afternoon traffic periods. On September 22, 1999, City staff met with Mr. Richard Obar, Assistant Principal of Saugus High School, and observed traffic conditions along Centurion Way in front of the school. Staffs evaluation indicated that passenger loadinglunloading zones and a bus only zone would minimize traffic congestion and provide the school with designated drop-off and pick-up areas. The northern passenger loading/unloading zone would extend from the school driveway north of Hyssop Lane to the driveway south of Hyssop Lane (450 feet). The southern passenger loading/unloading zone would extend from the school driveway north of Caraway Lane to the next driveway to the north (200 feet). The bus only zone would extend from the school driveway south of Hyssop Lane to the next driveway to the south (200 feet). The posted hours for all three parking zones would be from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on school days only. On September 27, 1999, City staff received a letter (Exhibit 'W') from Saugus High School confirming the request. Adopted: 3Le./ 6 9-/ 75- kap, Item. Other action as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT The work involves the installation of eleven signs, amounting to approximately $1,100.00. Funds are available in the Field Services Striping and Signing Maintenance account for this work. .
