DEPARTMENT: City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to offer a reward in the amount
of $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons
responsible for the attempted murder of Matthew Nemecek.
BACKGROUND
In November 1996, the City Council formally adopted a reward policy. Since that time the City
has on occasion offered rewards in order to help facilitate the solving of a crime.
On September 28, 1999 an attempted murder and residential burglary occurred at Cachuma
Lane (Sand Canyon area of Canyon Country). The victim, 18 year old Explorer Scout Matthew
Nemecek, has endured several surgeries as a result of this attack and is currently in rehab
awaiting yet another surgery. He may lose the use of his left arm.
On the date of the incident, Matthew worked an early morning shift at the Canyon Country
Vons Market, then went home to get some sleep before taking a test for one of his College of the
Canyons classes. While sleeping in his room, Matt was awakened by a masked suspect who
began to stab him. He tried to escape and run down the hallway but the suspect ran after him
and continued to stab him. Matt again broke away from his attacker and managed to crawl
outside and hide in a dog house. He remained in the dog house for 1 1/z hours, bleeding from
approximately 12 knife wounds. Believing the suspect was gone, Matt drug himself back into
the house and dialed 911. Shortly there after, he passed out.
Deputies responded, rendered aid to Matthew, discovered an extensive, bloody crime scene and
noted that the house was partially ransacked. Detectives and crime lab personnel responded
to the scene and began the investigation. The only item believed to have been stolen was a nine
inch men's gold bracelet.

To this date, detectives have worked several leads, some of which have led to dead ends. They
are asking the community for assistance in this disturbing case in hopes of identifying the
brutal suspect before he strikes again.
The only information the Sheriff has at this point is that the suspect is a male, Hispanic or
white, 25-35 years of age, 5'09"-6'00" tall, heavy build, bushy eyebrows, wearing dark clothing
including a black knit ski mask with two eye holes. The possible vehicle is a dark or blue
Toyota Rav-4 or similar type of vehicle.
