SAVE -ADOPT -VACCINATE -EDUCATE (SAVE) PROGRAM
City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council provide staff with direction on whether or not to provide a contribution to the
SAVE program.
BACKGROUND
Recently Mayor Jo Anne Darcy received a letter from the County of Los Angeles Animal Care
and Control Department requesting the City's support of a new pet population control program,
which is called Save -Adopt -Vaccinate -Educate (SAVE). This program is in response to statistics
covering the last five years that demonstrate steady increases in dog impounds and increased
numbers of animals in shelters. The Purpose of this program is to increase adoption by pre -
spaying and neutering all adopted animals at no cost to the adopter, or a way of lowering the
adoption cost.
The County has received support from the Animal Care Foundation, a registered 501 [c] (3)
non-profit organization, which has pledged $100,000 towards the program. The cost of the
program is estimated to be approximately $400,000 for one full year throughout Los Angeles
County. In addition to the various private and non-profit organizations, the County is
requesting a one-time contribution, ranging from $500 to $5,000, from cities to help create a
successful program.
In exchange for the City's support, the County is offering that Santa Clarita residents who
reclaim their stray cat or dog from one of the Country's shelters will receive a free spay or neuter
for that animal.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funding is available in City Council Contingency account no 1240-7401.
