A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING PROVISION IN THE STATE
BUDGET FOR SUFFICIENT BASELINE FUNDING FOR THE CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE
SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS CONSERVANCY.
WHEREAS, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy provides essential acquisition
and land use planning functions in this region; and
WHEREAS, these functions are mandated by state law; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy provides local governments,
landowners, community groups, and state and federal agencies with cooperative and innovative
planning to preserve the ecosystems, beauty, recreational opportunities, and character of this
region.
WHEREAS, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has acquired and preserved
critical parkland through direct purchase and through such other means as development
monitoring, negotiating and accepting developer dedications, and grant writing; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy does not have adequate funding
to perform these critical non -capital outlay acquisition functions; and
WHEREAS, other conservancies, such those based in northern California, are provided
with baseline non -capital outlay funding; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Monica Mountains and the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor are
environmentally sensitive and important areas worthy of such State support.
.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, STATE OF CALIFORNIA:
URGES the Governor and State Legislature to provide baseline personnel and
operations funding for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
2. INSTRUCTS the City Clerk to communicate the Council's support to Governor
Davis and appropriate Senators, Assembly -members and other elected officials.
