Planning and Parks & Recreation Commissions
March 2, 1999
Call To Order: 5:30 p.m.
Roll Call: All Councilmembers were present. All Planning
Commissioners were present. All Parks & Recreation
Commissioners were present with the exception of Todd
Longshore.

ITEM 1 SUSTAINABILITY — Ken Pulskamp, Assistant City Manager,
provided an overview of the existing activities undertaken by the City
and introduced Jeff Lambert, Director of Planning & Building
Services, and Amelia Rietzel, Environmental Services Coordinator,
who discussed aspects of the program and received feedback from the
group.
In terms of the role of local government, feedback was provided that
the City should take a lead role, develop a policy statement and
educate and sell the program to the community.
In terms of mobilizing the community, feedback was provided that the
efforts in Canyon Country and Saugus were a good start, the program
could be added to Arbor Day activities, and that the City could work
through youth and community groups.
In terms of a city work plan, feedback was provided that staff would
need to communicate the City's goal with other agencies, develop a
budget and allocate staff, develop guidelines and goals, take small
steps and accomplish them, and clarify and define the term
sustainability.
Public Participation: Skip Newhall, Marsha McLean and Allan
Cameron addressed the group.
Ken Pulskamp, Assistant City Manager, concluded the item and
acknowledged that staff would move forward with the program.
Mayor Darcy called for general Public Participation; Allan Cameron and Sheriffs
Captain Don Rodriguez addressed the group.
Mayor Darcy adjourned the meeting at 6:50 p.m.
