ITEM 1 LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT —
PRESENTATION ON GROWTH — Lee Baca, Sheriff, made opening
comments and Don Rodriguez, Chief of Police for the City, made a
presentation on statistics for the last 10 years and anticipated growth
until the year 2010.
Council questions and concerns: the need to finance and expand both
the facility and parking area for the current County offices/courts; the
timing for access to the proposed new City Hall site; the need to
increase Sheriff personnel to keep the City's status as the 4`" safest
City of its size; retaining experienced, committed personnel within the
valley while allowing opportunities for advancement; the possibility of
having motorcycle officers; the availability of programs to integrate
diverse populations.
City Manager Caravalho suggested coming up with a facilities plan
that Council could prioritize and working with Newhall Land & Farm
on available property. He also commented on the good relations and
communications enjoyed with the Sheriffs Department and noted how
Chief Rodriguez is particularly accessible, responsive and visible in
the community.
Mayor Darcy called for general Public Participation. Connie Worden-Roberts
commented on the continuity and stability of deputies and the timing of when the
decision is made to build more stations or satellite facilities. Michael Shanklin
commented on integrating Federal funding into the local area.
Mayor Darcy adjourned the meeting at 7:39 p.m.
