HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-11-07 - AGENDA REPORTS - AIR QUALITY COST (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: =Da. and Members of the City Council FROM: ava oyy Manager DATE: November 7, 2000 SUBJECT: THE REAL COST OF AIR QUALITY IN THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA City Council accept report for information only. Air pollution directly affects the quality of life in Santa Clarita and the rest of the South Coast Air Basin. Air Quality affects our health, our ability to walk through our parks and paseos, and can even affect our emotional health. Air pollution is associated with several different kinds of costs: costs to our health, costs to our children and costs to the economy. The Federal Clean Air Act was created in 1972. Twenty-eight years later, the South Coast Air Basin is still the worst non-compliance region in the Country. Nearly $10 billion is spent each year in health related costs associated with air pollution in the South Coast region alone. Approximately 1,600 people die each year in the South Coast region due to air pollution. Children are at the highest risk of respiratory illness. Business and industry pay an estimated $85 million per year in fees and programs related to air quality compliance. Consumers have been affected by higher gasoline prices. Although the City has implemented several programs to address the costs of air pollution, we still have a considerable amount of work left to do. The South Coast Air Quality Management District is the agency, which regulates air quality in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The City of Santa Clarita has enjoyed a good working relationship with the AQMD since incorporation in 1987. The AQMD supports the City's opinion that the Transit Mixed Mining Facility is detrimental to the air quality of the Santa Clarita Valley.
