HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-10-10 - AGENDA REPORTS - DIVERISTY CONFR (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT NEW BUSINESS City Manager A] Item to be DATE: October 10, 2000 SUBJECT: DIVERSITY 2001 CONFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Adele Macpherson City Council appropriate funds for Diversity 2001 Conference in the amount of $8,500 to account number 7427-8110. $5,500 to be transferred from City Council Contingency Fund number 1240-7401. Revenue totaling $3,000 will be deposited in account number 001-6714. BACKGROUND The SCV Human Relations Forum was formed in 1994, in response to a hate crime that occurred in Santa Clarita. The Forum is comprised of volunteers from the community whose mission is to encourage, assist, and empower the people of Santa Clarita to eliminate all forms of discrimination. The Human Relations Forum has been a member of the Human Relations Mutual Assistance Consortium (HRMAC) since 1995. Each year a member city of HRMAC hosts the Conference, and HRMAC has requested that Santa Clarita host the Conference for 2001. On January 24, 2001, the City of Santa Clarita's Human Relations Forum will host the Conference, which will include sixty-five HRMAC member cities, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's, school administrators, and the public. The Forum is designed to showcase effective programs of member cities, and will be an opportunity for Santa Clarita to showcase the Human Relations Forum and the programs they have created. The Conference will highlight current issues regarding human relations, cultural diversity, tolerance and understanding, and provide solutions to deal with the issues. Many programs that will be presented were created and implemented by Forum members. Educational sessions, experiential learning sessions, and keynote speakers will all be included in the Conference. The cost of the Conference will total $8,500, and will be offset by approximately $3,000 in revenue, which will be collected via registration fees. APPROVED Agenda Item/6 ALTERNATIVE ACTION Deny funding for Conference. Other direction as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT Total program cost is $8,500; apprwrimately $3,000 in revenues will be generated. The balance of $5,500 is being requested from City Council Contingency account number 1240- 7401. None.
