SUBJECT: RESOLUTION TO APPLY TO THE CALIFORNIA
DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION FOR
GRANT FUNDS UNDER THE URBAN AND COMMUNITY
FORESTRY PROGRAM'S TREES FOR THE MILLENNIUM
INITIATIVE
DEPARTMENT: Administrative Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution, authorizing the City Manager to submit an application
to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for funding under the
Urban and Community Forestry Program's Trees for the Millennium Initiative. Direct
the City Manager, if selected for funding and subject to City Attorney approval, to enter
into agreements with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
necessary to participate in the Urban and Community Forestry Program.
City staff has identified the need to purchase 1,000 trees in an effort to fill over 6,000
tree vacancies in the right-of-ways throughout the City. These trees will reduce the
release of diesel and other engine pollutants within the City. The success of the grant
application will provide the City with funds towards the costs associated with the
purchase and planting of the trees. These new trees will allow us to meet the City's goal
of planting 1,000 trees in our parks and along our streets each year. The City was
successful in being awarded a 1999/2000 Trees for the Millennium grant last year, and
the CDBG Division is working closely with the Urban Forestry Division to accomplish
the new tree planting program for 2000/2001.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
Not apply for the Urban and Community Forestry Program funds.
