Nisich SUBJECT: ONBOARD BUS CAMERAS — AWARD OF CONTRACT DEPARTMENT: Transportation & Engineering Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council approve the award of contract to Kalatel in the amount of $102,223.54 to supply and install a digital video recording system onboard 12 existing Santa Clarita Transit buses. Authorize the City Manager to execute all documents, subject to City Attorney approval. BACKGROUND In the 1999/2000 budget, City Council authorized funds of $216,000.00 for onboard bus cameras. Although criminal activity onboard Santa Clarita Transit vehicles is extremely rare, law enforcement officials encourage the use of surveillance technology due to its effectiveness as a deterrent. Because the City is currently negotiating a contract to replace 22 of 34 local buses, a competitive procurement for the installation of cameras on 12 remaining buses was recently completed. On March 14, 2000, the following proposals were received by the City Clerk's Office: , , th Staff recommends that the project be awarded to Kalatel of CorvallisOregonfor e sum of $102,223.54. The proposal was reviewed for accuracy and conformance to the contract documents and found to be complete. Kalatel possesses the superior experience and qualified personnel required to fulfill this contract. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS City Council not approve award of contract. This action would result in a program implementation delay, without significant benefit. Other action as determined by the City Council. n .
