GRANNIS Submitted 5/11/00 TO THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA: I would very much like to be considered for the position of Commissioner on the Santa Clarita City Planning Commission. The planning decisions which will come before the Commission during the next several years will be critical In determining how well we manage future growth, and how well we preserve and enhance the quality of life in our community. I am enclosing a list of my professional qualifications, which I believe would allow me to make a valuable contribution to the work of the Commission, and to the quality of life in the Santa Clarita of the future. Please consider the following: • My family and I have lived here since 1988. We have put down deep roots in the community, in our church, and in our neighborhood. We have raised our oldest son here, and we intend to raise our youngest son here as well. This is our home, and we want to see it grow and prosper with careful planning. • Much of the future growth in this area will take place outside Santa Clarita, in areas to the west and north of the current City boundaries. As a resident of the Saugus area, I am particularly sensitive to the needs of the residents in this part of the City. The Commission will have important decisions to make in the future about development in and around Central Park, development north of Copper Hill Drive, east of Haskell Canyon west of McBean Parkway; about the completion of roads and bridges in the area; about the economic development throughout the City, and about the preservation of the canyon ridgelines which make this valley a distinctive place to live. Many of these decisions will be controversial, and some will be unpopular. I believe it will be important for the Commission to have, as one of its members, a resident of the Saugus area. If selected to serve as a Commissioner, I will make it my special task to inform and educate my neighbors about the work of the Commission in making these important decisions. • The current incumbents on the Commission have backgrounds in business and finance and in engineering. These are important skill sets for the Commission to have among its members. Equally critical, however, is the need for someone with a background in both litigated and transactional legal matters. I have such a background, as my enclosed resume reveals. I have an excellent grasp of the general legal principles in a wide variety of areas. I also have excellent legal research and writing skills. (My library resources are all online, and are available to me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the comfort of my own home office, as well as from my main office In Glendale.) I believe it will be important for the Commission to have, as one of its members, someone who can work with staff and with members of the public appearing before the Commission on the legal issues that will certainly arise In the course of the Commission's work. If selected to serve as a Commissioner, I will use my legal knowledge and skills to ensure that the work of the Commission is of the best quality, and to eliminate any doubt that Its decisions have been reached with due consideration of the rights of all citizens who come before it. Finally, I have no political axe to grind. I seek only the opportunity to serve my City In a manner that will make good use of my professional and personal skills and experiences. My sole interest is helping to manage the planning challenges ahead, in a way that enhances the quality of life for all Santa Claritans. Having been appointed to serve on the Commission on three separate occasions, I remain extremely interested in the caliber of the individuals serving on the Commission. First of all, he is a person who cares deeply about his family and this Doreen KMK7 community. 1 have noticed that this caring attitude is the basis of all he does both . coma, in and out of the church. I am sure his desire to serve on the Planning Committee Sb&Not s'jd= is a result of the deep sense of caring he has for our community. This is a quality sdusbaer I would like to see in my civic leaders. Next, Mr. Grannis is a man of integrity. His integrity is based on a strong sense of Christian morality, which he balances well with personal grace and patience. In my relationship with Mr. Grannis, this quality of Mr. Grannis has been very important as I am sure it will be when he serves on the commission. Finally, Mr. Grannis is a man whose service is genuine. Many people serve to boost their ego. Sometimes, it becomes the main reason for service. Mr. Grannis serves others out of a strong sense of who he is, rather than out of a sense of inadequacy. I have never seen him demand recognition for services he renders. 1 believe that Mr. Grannis will serve our community well as our church has been served well by him. I would like to see John on the board because this area has had limited representation and I feel it needs to have a strong voice in its advocacy. Having known John for quite a awhile, I can vouch for his character. He is honest, sincere, and I truly believe he only wants what's best (and what is right) for his family, friends, and community. John is a committed worker who pays attention to the details of a situation and can look at it from all points of view. Qualifications: Due to my unique background and experience I feel I have excellent qualifications to serve as a member of the Planning Commission. I have known her to be responsible, flexible, well -organized, and enthusiastic on the job. We are always relieved when Sue shows up to cover for one of our regular teachers! I believe that Sue Higgins would be an excellent addition to the City of Santa Clarita Planning Commission. As a founding `pioneer" of the Santa Clarita Cityhood movement, I strongly endorse her as a candidate for the Planning Commission. She will work diligently in this position of service for our community, just as she has worked in an exemplary manner as a substitute teacher for the William S. Hart Union High School District. Valencia Blvd. Valencia, CA 91355 May 9, 2000 To Those Concerned: It is with pleasure that a letter of recommendation for Mrs. Sue Higgins is forwarded to those concerned. As a fellow member of the Education Community at the Meadows School in the Newhall School District, Sue was a vital member of the Parent-Teacher Association while her two children attended school there. Her next support occasion was at Placenta Canyon junior High and again at W.S. Hart High School. Sue has been an active member of The Friends' group for a number of years. Always there when a need arises, Sue has particularly been a tremendous force for the very successful twice -yearly Book Sales held at the Valencia Library. Contacting members for volunteering to sort books, set-up the facility, and/or to work at the book sale, have all thrived under her capable care. A special postcard to confirm volunteer dates was Sue's creation and serves as a fine example of a non-stop drive to serve the Friends' interests to the utmost. Energetic and community -minded, Sue is a very capable woman. We are proud to include her as a stalwart member of the Friends of the Libraries of the Santa Clarita Valley. Sincerely, 'Dorothy M. I have known Marsha for several years, beginning with my involvement with American Association of University Women's efforts in the fight against the Elsmere Canyon landfill. Marsha's leadership was instrumental in gaining the support of community groups such as AAUW. I was especially impressed with her ability to explain complex issues in understandable terms - a quality essential for the Planning Commission. During the recent City Council election, 1 supported Marsha because she is knowledgeable about the issues facing our community, understands the technical aspects of our General Plan, and, because she is fair. I think the same assets that would have made her a valuable addition to the City Council would benefit our city as a member of the Planning Commission. Marsha's resume will detail her prior jobs and community service involvement. All of this, along with her desire to continue to contribute to our city, would make Marsha an excellent Planning Commissioner. Sarro 22612 Pamplico .Drive Santa Clarita, CA 91350 661-297-5115 May 9, 2000 To the Honorable members of the Santa Clarita City Council. This letter is in enthusiastic support of Marsha McLean and her application for the position of Planning Commissioner of the City of Santa Clarita. I met Marsha about 20 years ago through our mutual love of theatre and the Canyon Theatre Guild. I have worked with her in the theatre, on fundraisers and numerous community functions. I have watched with interest her discovery and eventual full time involvement in Elsmere Canyon. I'm sorry to say I did not join her in that fight at that time. I am amazed at Marsha's knowledge of the city's general plan, including any upcoming and proposed development. She not only attends Council meetings, she attends Planning Commission meetings and has a keen understanding of what is being discussed. All you need do is ask her. Marsha is dedicated and committed to the betterment of this community. She can listen very carefully to all sides of an issue and can disagree with a position, and not be disagreeable. She has proven her mettle by running for the City Council twice. I hope she receives the City Council's full consideration. She would be a most valuable asset to the Planning Commission.
