BACKGROUND Pursuant to the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act, the California Department of Conservation is required to distribute funds to jurisdictions throughout the State for beverage container recycling programs. Funds are distributed on a per capita basis. The City of Santa Clarita is eligible to receive $42,968. It is estimated that Californians purchase over 12 billion beverage containers (including plastic, glass and aluminum containers) each year. These types of containers represent as much as 10% of the total waste stream in the State. Currently the City of Santa Clarita collects these types of materials through the residential curbside recycling program each week: In addition, there are drop-off and redemption centers located throughout the City for the collection and recycling of these materials. The City would use the funds to develop, print and distribute public education materials targeting the recycling of beverage containers. In addition, funds will be used to purchase promotional items made of recycled beverage containers (for example, recycled shoelaces made from soda bottles) for use at public events and presentations. These activities will assist the City in achieving its diversion goal of 75% by the year 2005.
