SUBJECT: USDA FOREST SERVICE TRAIL MAINTENANCE
AGREEMENT

RECOMMENDED ACTION
Authorize the City Manager to sign all necessary documents to enter into a
maintenance agreement with the USDA Forest Service, Angeles National Forest,
subject to City Attorney approval.
On March 9, 2000, the City of Santa Clarita (City) entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) between the City and the USDA Forest Service, Angeles
National Forest. This MOU provided the general understanding and conditions for
working together on trails systems, recreational opportunities and volunteer
activities involving both agency missions. The MOU calls for specific maintenance
agreements to be developed for each trail section on Forest Service lands to be
managed by the City.
This maintenance agreement covers two short sections (approximately one-half mile)
of trail east of Robinson Ranch that extend onto Forest Service lands. The term of
the agreement is for two years with the ability to automatically renew for an
additional two years from each new expiration date. The agreement identified the
City as the lead agency regarding maintenance responsibilities. This section of trail
will be maintained as part of the City's backbone regional trail system.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
Other actions as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Personnel, equipment, and supplies for maintenance of the City's regional trail
system on approximately one-half mile of forest service lands.
