HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-02-08 - RESOLUTIONS - PROP 14 READ LITERACY LIBRARY (2)RESOLUTION NO. 00- 2 7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA FOR PROPOSITION 14 CALIFORNIA READING AND LITERACY IMPROVEMENT AND PUBLIC LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION BOND ACT OF 2000 WHEREAS, Public libraries are a supplement to public education and serve as centers of lifelong learning and literacy, and WHEREAS, Libraries provide a safe place for students to study and complete homework assignments, and for adults to gain practical skills through a variety of adult learning programs, and WHEREAS, Public libraries deserve adequate financial support from government at all levels, and WHEREAS, This proposition allows the state to sell $350 million of general obligation bonds for local library facilities, and .— WHEREAS, These funds can be used to build new libraries, renovate inadequate facilities, provide state-of-the-art equipment, improve study conditions and create a safe, comfortable environment for users, and WHEREAS, By law, none of this bond money can be used by local government for administrative costs, and WHEREAS, Proposition 14 is a critical element in achieving California's literacy goals and for strengthening the State's educational system, and WHEREAS, This measure will appear on the March 7, 2000 statewide ballot and, if approved by California voters, will provide significant funding to address California's public library construction needs. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA does resolve to support Proposition 14, the California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2000, and voters are encouraged to vote on March 7, 2000 in favor of Proposition 14.
