Nisich DATE: September 25, 2001 SUBJECT: BUS BENCH AND SHELTER ANNUAL CONTRACT EXTENSION DEPARTMENT: Transportation & Engineering Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council authorize the City Manager to renew the existing bus shelter and bench contracts. BACKGROUND In 1995, the City of Santa Clarita entered into two revenue -neutral contracts to install and maintain bus benches and shelters within the City limits. Clear Channel Communications, formerly Eller Media, owns and maintains the shelters in the City, and Coast United Advertising owns and maintains the benches. The current agreements provide approximately 65 shelters, 254 benches, and 50 trashcans to a system of about 650 bus stop locations. The initial contracts covered a five-year period with four one-year contract extensions. The City has exercised two of those extensions. Consistent with direction provided by the City Council at the Study Session of July 3, 2001, the recommended action will extend the contracts to February 2003. Staff will evaluate requests for additional shelter locations, including those requested in the Canyon Country area. Additional advertising shelters will be installed where sufficient rights-of-way exist and no capital improvements are necessary. Staff will return to the City Council to authorize the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) in spring 2002. That RFP will be designed to increase the number of shelters and benches Citywide, including areas where additional rights-of-way need to be acquired or capital improvements made. Also, the RFP will focus on improved aesthetics and will explore advertising content review. A new contract for bus benches and shelters will then be implemented in February 2003. ALTERNATIVE ACTION Other action as determined by the City Council Agenda Item: aZ Lv; BUS BENCH AND SHELTER ANNUAL CONTRACT EXTENSION September 25, 2001 — Page 2 FISCAL IMPACT None.
