HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-02-13 - AGENDA REPORTS - CHARACTER COUNTS PROGRAM (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT NEW BUSINESS City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: ele_ Maw n DATE: February 13, 2001 Ad SUBJECT: EXPANSION OF THE CHARACTER COUNTS(sm PROGRAM IN 2001, "THE YEAR OF CHARACTER," IN THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services RECOMMENDED ACTION Authorize $52,000 to be transferred from City Council Contingency account #1240-7401 to account #7455-8110 for the hiring of a nationally certified Character Education Trainer. Authorize City Manager, or his designee, to execute all documents thereto, subject to City Attorney's approval. BACK_ GROUND CHARACTER COUNTS! is the nation's most widely used character education program. In 1987, Michael Josephson founded the Josephson Institute of Ethicsand laun CHARACTER COUNTS! Program based on six core ethical valuesched the : trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship. In November 1995, the City of Santa Clarita adopted a resolution supportingC COUNTS! and joined the national CHARACTER CO CHARACTER Pre-schools, elementary schools, junior high schools, COUNTS! Coalition. and oththe ery youth -based basedprograms throughout the Valley have adopted the program. The City's membership of 50, which includes business professionals, school administ ators,teachers,aand active community members. The proposal is to expand the program in the year 2001, "The Year of Character," to increase membership and participation of the City's coalition, and improve awareness of the significance to the citizens of the City. The businesses, faith o expansion would include outreach to schools, organizations to rganizations, youth sports representatives, City staff, and other community CHARACTER COUNTS! education and training on how to promote the values of the UNTS. program. This expansion will benefit the community by providing a heightened consciousness of the importance of ethics and values and giving them tools to demonstrate these values on a daily basis. Community participation in a program such as this will aid in preserving the excellent quality of life in the City of Santa Clarita. Agenda Item: �� This Proposal includes hiring a nationally certified trainer to aid us in accomplishing this goal, The proposed trainer, Diane Ball, has over 25 years of experience as an educator at the elementary level. Diane has been a teacher, a member of leadership teams, and a workshop facilitator in the public school system in Los Angeles, Saugus, State. In recent years she has devoted herself to the stuand implementation of character education yon rY> and New York participating in training in both Ohio and California. She is a certified CHARACTER COUNTS. trainer and a graduate of "Ethics in the Workplace," a Josephson Institute of Ethics training program. Diane has worked with the Josephson Institute of Ethics both as an employee and a volunteer. Ms. Ball holds a BA from Lake Erie College and a Masters Degree (MST) in teaching from Fordham University.
