Caravalho, City Manager DATE: February 6, 2001 SUBJECT: CITYWIDE DESIGN STANDARDS RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council receive presentation and provide direction to staff. BACKGROUND The City Council has asked staff to improve design and development standards throughout the community. The purpose of tonight's study session is to review the standards that are currently in place, to review additional standards that are now being prepared, and to provide the City Council with an opportunity to provide direction to staff. Staff will be reviewing the development standards already included in the City's Unified Development Code (UDC). Staff will also review the Design Guidelines adopted by the City Council. Finally, staff will review the current status of the Santa Clarita Beautification Master Plan. This plan is in the final stages of development and will be considered by the Planning Commission and City Council in the coming months. The combination of these three documents, as well as Special Standards Districts which have already been adopted for specific communities, work together to guide the design of developments. Staff will be looking for specific direction from the Council as to which areas of design and development standards need improvement. During the 2000-2001 mid -year budget process, the City Council adopted $50,000 to create a comprehensive set of improvement development standards. The direction received by the Council at this study session will be used to guide the creation of this document.
