BACKGROUND
For approximately 10 years, the City of Santa Clarita has provided funds for community
organizations through the Community Services Grant Program. Each year, a Community
Services Grant Committee is assembled to determine funding categories, review and rate
applications, and make final funding recommendations. In the past, funding has been used
to provide programs in the Arts, Violence Prevention, Beautification, Drug and Alcohol
Prevention, and After School Programs.
This year's funding categories are the Arts, Tolerance and Understanding, Beautification/
School -Based, and Literacy Programs. Forty-nine grant applications were received, with
requests totaling $380,451. The breakdown per category is as follows:
• Arts — 16 applications, totaling $137,468
• Tolerance and Understanding — 8 applications, totaling $71,425
• Beautification/School-Based — 14 applications, totaling $93,618
• Literacy— 11 applications, totaling $77,940
City Council approved funding for $200,000 in the 2000-01 budget to be awarded to the
selected grant applicants. The maximum funding for each applicant is $10,000.
As a pilot program, the Santa Clarita Resource Center provided four opportunities for the
applicants to meet and network in preparation for writing the grants. As a result, the
committee members commented on the improved quality of grant applications this year.
