HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-07-10 - AGENDA REPORTS - HOMELESS SHELTER (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: July 10, 2001 City Manager Approval _64�_� Item to be presented by: Adele Macpherson SUBJECT: HOMELESS SHELTER 2001-2002 DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services RECOMMENDED ACTION Approve use of approximately 10,000 square feet of land at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex for use as a temporary homeless shelter from November 1, 2001 to March 31, 2002. Approve a budget transfer of $45,000 from the Council Contingency Fund, account number 1240-7401 to account number 7411-8001. Direct staff to continue to work with the Santa Clarita Community Development Corporation (SCCDC) to develop a long-term solution. BACKGROUND Since 1997, the City of Santa Clarita has allowed the SCCDC to utilize the Santa Clarita Sports Complex as a temporary homeless shelter. Last year the shelter successfully operated out of modular units on the parking lot north of Building #3. Due to construction of the Aquatics Facility, this location will not be available for 2001-2002. The proposed location borders Reuther Street on the northeast portion of the property (see Attachment 1). The SCCDC has actively researched 20 potential locations this past year without success. They are aware that this is the last year there will be suitable or available land in the entire Sports Complex. The SCCDC will be making a presentation to the City Council at the September 4, 2001 study session regarding long-term homeless shelter options. ALTERNATIVE ACTION Decline City fiscal involvement in the continuation of a winter shelter. Other direction as determined by City Council.
