BACKGROUND The City seeks to apply for a grant to implement a reuse program for part of the construction and demolition waste stream. Staff estimates the tonnage of construction and demolition waste in the year 2000 may have been as high as 32,000 tons. The proposed grant program will facilitate a construction and demolition waste reuse program. This program would consist of providing a storage facility for donated materials if they cannot be stored elsewhere, providing a local exchange for the Santa Clarita Valley, and promoting the exchanges. The main aspect of this proposed project is to facilitate reuse of construction and demolition waste to the maximum extent practicable before the materials are considered for recycling and/or disposal. The City would provide storage facility space to builders who have run out of room on the construction site due to the progression of the development. The materials exchange would be available on the City's web site, through the City's Project Pollution Prevention Newsletter and at the Planning and Building Permit Counters. If awarded, funding would be available between March 2002 — March 2004. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Do not adopt the Resolution and direct staff not to apply for the grant. Other action as determined by the Council. FISCAL IMPACT The grant application requests $25,000, with a $25,000 match required. The funding source would be identified in the next fiscal year budgeting process, if awarded. Agenda Item:lr ATTACHMENTS Resolution JAF:HLM \\CITYHALL2\DEPT\PBS\ENVSRVCS\Heather\Grants\reuseagenda.doc
