RECOMMENDED ACTION
Approve the Public Art Committee's recommendation for a Public Art Garden at the new
Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons.
BACKGROUND
In 1999, a Memorandum of Understanding was issued by the City of Santa Clarita
committing $2.4 million toward the expansion of the proposed Performing Arts Center. Of
that $2.4 million, $100,000 was to be used for a piece of Public Art to be located at the site.
On March 6, 2001, at a City Council Study Session, Council approved the formation of a
special committee to help develop a design concept for the piece of Public Art. Council
directed the committee to return with the proposed design for City Council approval. The
Center, located on the campus of College of the Canyons,
2003. is scheduled to open in the fall of
The Public Art Committee recommends a Sculpture Garden over a single, expensive piece
Of sculpture. Benefits include a beautiful and flexible setting for several sculptures and a
place where students of the College of the Canyons and visitors to the Performing Arts
Center can enjoy coffee, chat with friends, view the sculptures, and enjoy the tranquility of
the garden. The Sculpture Garden will have disabled access and provide a beautiful
"gateway" to the campus. The Public Art Committee and staff believe this design will
provide the City of Santa Clarita with a greater return on investment for the $100,000
contribution toward Public Art at the new Performing Arts Center.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Decline recommendation of the Public Art Committee.
2. Direct the Public Art Committee and staff to find alternatives to the recommended
design.
None by this action.
