SUBJECT: RESOLUTION TO APPLY TO THE CALIFORNIA
DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION FOR
GRANT FUNDS UNDER PROPOSITION 12 FUNDED URBAN
FORESTRY GRANT PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT: Field Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution, authorizing the City Manager to submit an application
to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for funding under the
Proposition 12 Urban Forestry Grant Program. Direct the City Manager, if selected for
funding and subject to City Attorney approval, to enter into agreements with the
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection necessary to participate in the
Urban and Community Forestry Program.
BACKGROUND
City staff has identified the need to purchase 1,000 trees in an effort to fill over 6,000
tree vacancies in the right-of-ways throughout the City. These trees will reduce the
impact of the release of diesel and other engine pollutants within the City. The success
of the grant application will provide the City with funds towards the costs associated
with the purchase and planting of the trees. These new trees will allow us to meet the
City's goal of planting 1,000 trees in our parks and along our streets each year. The
City was successful in being awarded two Trees for the Millennium grants in 1999 and
2000. Administrative Services and the Urban Forestry Division are working closely to
accomplish the new tree planting program for 2001. The 1999 and 2000 Grants funded
1,700 trees.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
Not apply for the Urban and Community Forestry Program funds.
