POPULATION ESTIMATES FOR THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA
DEPARTMENT: Planning and Building Services
City Council receive and file information regarding the population estimates for the City of
Santa Clarita.
BACKGROUND
Per the request of Mayor Weste, staff reviewed the North Los Angeles County Subregion
2020 Growth Projection Report, which documents the population estimates for the City of
Santa Clarita. The report, prepared in October 1995 by the City of Palmdale Planning
Department, the City of Lancaster Development Department, the City of Santa Clarita
Department of Community Development, and the Los Angeles County Department of
Regional Planning for the Southern California Association of Governments (SLAG),
includes the population projections for the City of Santa Clarita for the year 2020 and the
methodology utilized to derive these numbers. The report was prepared by the four
agencies due to the belief that the SCAG population projections were overstated. According
to the report, SCAG projected a population of 230,438 for Santa Clarita in 2020, while the
North Los Angeles County 2020 Growth Projections indicated that the population for the
City of Santa Clarita in 2020 would be 205,135 persons.
Subsequent to providing the population information found in the 1995 report, the Southern
California Association of Government provided the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan
(RTP) revised population projections for the City of Santa Clarita. The revised population
projections are for the year 2020 and 2025 and are for the City of Santa Clarita, the
unincorporated areas of North Los Angeles County, and the unincorporated areas of the
Santa Clarita Valley. According to the new forecasts, the population for the City of Santa

excludes the cities of Palmdale, Lancaster, and Santa Clarita, is 360,400 persons in 2020
and 427,200 persons in 2025. Furthermore, SCAG extrapolated Regional Statistical Area
#8 from the unincorporated portions of North Los Angeles County area and determined that
the population for the unincorporated portions of the Santa Clarita Valley will be 111,403
persons in 2020 and 132,070 persons in 2025.
Therefore, the projected population for the entire Santa Clarita Valley, which includes the
City and the unincorporated Los Angeles County portions of the Santa Clarita Valley, is
314,403 persons in the year 2020.
