HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-10-09 - AGENDA REPORTS - SCV SCHOOL COALITION (2)NEW BUSINESS DATE: SUBJECT: DEPARTMENT: CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approi Item to be presented October 9, 2001 SANTA CLARITA VALLEY SCHOOL COALITION (SCVSC) City Manager RECOMMENDED ACTION Endorse City's participation in the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition (SCVSC) and involvement in the October 29, 2001 SCVSC School Summit Kick-off meeting. BACKGROUND Santa Clarita Valley schools are experiencing tremendous growth in student Population and are facing overcrowding situations throughout the five elementary and high school districts as well as the community college district. In an effort to alleviate the overcrowding situation and build the necessary schools and classrooms to house the valley's student population, the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition was formed. This Coalition has partnered the City of Santa Clarita, the County of Los Angeles and the Building Industry Association with the Castaic Union School District, the Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, Sulphur Springs School District, William S. Hart Union High School District and the Community College District. The Coalition and its various subcommittees have met multiple times since its inception in spring 2001 with the ultimate goal of developing the partnerships and relationships necessary to build additional schools throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. The SCV School Trustees Association will host the Coalition's first kick-off meeting on October 29, 2001 and has requested the use of the City Hall Council Chamlition is bers. The purpose of this meeting is one of both information and input. The Coa planning a brief presentation on the ins -and -outs of school siting and funding, an update on the current school deficit and update on the legislative efforts of the Coalitions Legislative Advocacy Subcommittee. The partnerships already formed through discussion among Coalition members have and will continue to have a very positive effect on the school situation in this Valley. Dj� Agenda Item:. While the State of California and the individual school districts have the ultimate authority to plan and site schools, the City, County and BIA are critical stakeholders in school development and want to work together in supporting the school districts. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS 1. Do not participate with the School Districts, County of Los Angeles and the Building Industry in the SCVSC. 2. Other action as determined by Council.
