HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-05-01 - MINUTES - STUDY SESSION NOTES (2)City Council Study Session May 1, 2001 Call To Order: 5:30 p.m. Roll Call: All Councilmembers were present with the exception of Councilmembers Ferry and Kellar. Flag Salute: Was led by Councilmember Smyth George Caravalho, City Manager, outlined the two topics for discussion and introduced staff who would present the items for Council consideration. ITEM 1 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS — Barbara Boswell, Accounting Manager, discussed possible long term relationships between private enterprises and the City and provided information on current event sponsorships as well as sponsorship opportunities. Council questions and concerns: the length of a typical contract realizing that typically the longer the contract, the greater the benefit; concerned about limiting competition and not wanting to close out other companies; whether other cities have encountered battles or any negatives with sponsorships; proceeding with a bid process and ensuring no loss or decline in service; not violating any codes; being sure it is appropriate for a family community; needing appropriate tracking methods for the money; going forward and coming back with terms of a contract; liking concept and wanting more information. ITEM 2 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - Mike Haviland, Marketing and Economic Development Manager, outlined events, special events and publications supported by the Tourism Bureau and funding received. With the assistance of Jenny Santizo and Laura Karp, the website and video were displayed showing how anyone with computer access can get information about the attractions in the Santa Clarita community. Information about tourism was shared via a mock game show. Council questions and concerns: the possibility of including information about the ice rink and horseback riding in future videos as recreation opportunities; adding information about live theatre; utilizing effective marketing ideas from Williamsburg, Virginia; making bikes available at hotels so visitors would have access to trails; doing more to capture the Pacific Rim market; creating a hotel package for a trolley to transport visitors to various spots; expanding the jazz festival; and pushing the Placenta Nature Center. Mayor Weste called for public participation. 1 Addressing the Council was Brian Roney, chair of the Tourism Bureau regarding projects; Duane Harte on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce regarding becoming the destination we desire to be; Allan Cameron regarding a historical element; Chris Shoemaker representing the International Film Festival regarding their program; and Laura Hauser of the Parks & Recreation Commission requesting a joint meeting with the Council in support of economic development. Mayor Weste commented on Mentryville, requested copies of the statistics provided at this meeting, and requesting that the video be shown to the Councilmembers absent from this meeting.
