DATE: January 8, 2002 SUBJECT: RESOLUTION FOR THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION BEVERAGE CONTAINER RECYCLING GRANT FOR PROMOTING INCREASED RECYCLING OF BEVERAGE CONTAINERS DEPARTMENT: Planning and Building Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council adopt a Resolution for the California Department of Conservation Beverage Container Recycling Grant in the amount of $60,000 for promotion of reduction of litter and recycling beverage containers. BACKGROUND The City seeks to apply for a grant to promote increased recycling of beverage containers and reduce litter. In an effort to revitalize recycling, the City will provide beverage recycling containers at high -usage bus stops and the same time increase public awareness through bus stop advertisement. The purpose of the grant request is to provide urgently needed recycling opportunities to high -usage public transportation stops to the public. The requested grant funds will be used to provide convenient and efficient trash and recycling containers for public transportation stops that are highly susceptible to litter. The grant would enable the City to purchase 60 sets of automated trash and recycling containers (designed to be collected using the hauler's existing trash truck infrastructure), which would be placed at the City's bus shelters. In addition to providing convenient trash and recycling services to residents, the program will also address the public's concern over unsightful littering at various bus stop locations within the City and will facilitate increasing the City's diversion. Additional grant funds will also be used for the production of advertisement posters to promote recycling campaigns which will be placed at bus shelter locations as public outreach and education and continue advertising new efforts. If awarded, funding would be available April 2002. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the Council.
