City Manager Approva
Item to be presented by: Ruben Barrera
CONSENT CALENDAR
DATE: October 22, 2002
SUBJECT: EXTENSION OF CONTRACT FOR CONTRACTUAL BUILDING
AND SAFETY SERVICES
DEPARTMENT: Planning & Building Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve extension of contract for professional building inspection services by
JAS, for a new total amount not to exceed $100,000, from account 3710-8001.
BACKGROUND
The City's Building and Safety Division uses contractual services for inspection of new
buildings. Contractual support for inspection is intended to supplement staffs effort to
respond to increased demand for these services. A current contract exists with JAS to
provide these services for $45,000. Staff anticipates that based on the current service
demands that this amount is not sufficient, and is requesting the City Council authorize an
increase of the contract not to exceed $100,000.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Do not approve extension of contract for building and safety contractual inspection
services which could lower the current one day inspection response time and require the
roll-over (rescheduling) of 15-20% of inspections per day. On the average 100
inspections are called for in a day and with 20% roll-over 20 of those inspections would
not get done. This impacts the contractors in the field who have workers on the job that
can't continue work due to the delay in inspection scheduling.
2. Other direction as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds for this expenditure have been budgeted in account 3710 -8001 -FY 02-03.
