City Council receive and comment.
BACKGROUND
In 1996, the City of Santa Clarita adopted CHARACTER COUNTS!, a National nonpartisan,
nonsectarian alliance made up of various schools, communities, and nonprofit organizations,
dedicated to strengthening the character of America's people with a consistent set of ethical
values. These values, called the "Six Pillars of Character," are Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
The City Council proclaimed this year "The Year of Character" in Santa Clarita. Diane Ball
was hired as the City's Character Development Consultant, to continue outreach into the
schools, businesses, and faith organizations throughout the community. Ms. Ball has trained
City staff and has presented the program to both the Planning and Parks and Recreation
Commissions. Ms. Ball most recently presented the program to a group of business, civic, and
education leaders during CHARACTER COUNTS! week in October. These presentations are
designed to inform all City leaders about the CHARACTER COUNTS! program.
