HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-03-26 - AGENDA REPORTS - COUNCILMEMBER COMP (2)CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Item to be pre: DATE: March 26, 2002 SUBJECT: COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION DEPARTMENT: City Council RECOMMENDED ACTION Adopt an ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING SECTION 2.04.048 TO THE SANTA CLARITA MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING CITY COUNCIL SALARIES." BACKGROUND At the March 12, 2002 City Council meeting, the City Council considered and passed to second reading an ordinance regarding Councilmember Compensation. Members of the Santa Clarita City Council are compensated monthly by the City for the substantial amount of time and effort they contribute leading our local government. Each Councilmember makes personal and financial sacrifices in order to fulfill the responsibilities associated with their jobs. The last City Council compensation adjustment took place on July 1, 2000. Government Code Section 36516(c) sets forth basic provisions, which allow regular adjustments to City Council compensation. Government Code Section 36516.5 requires that Council compensation adjustments be adopted by -the present Council, to be effective for future Councils. This proposed adjustment presents a reasonable manner in which to assure the fair and equitable compensation of Councilmembers of future City Councils. Section 36516(c) provides for Councilmember compensation to be increased 5% for each calendar year from the operative date of the last adjustment of salary. The last salary adjustment was July 1, 2000. The recommended increase in Council Compensation is a compounded 10% increase to be effective July 1, 2002. This represents a 5% increase for the period of July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001 and a 5% increase for the period of July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. The proposed adjustment as set forth by the Government Code Section 36516(c) is as follows: Current Compensation Proposed Compensation (07/01/02) $1,063.77 $1,172.81 . Agenda Item:. ALTERNATIVE ACTION Other action as determined by the City Council FISCAL IMPACT The proposed increase of $109.04 a month represents an approximate annual increase of $7,448.00 in salary and salary based benefits and taxes. In the current fiscal year it represents no budget increase.
