SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE SAN GABRIEL
WATERSHED, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS, AND LOWER LOS
ANGELES RIVER GRANT PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the submittal of a grant application for the San
Gabriel Watershed, San Gabriel Mountains, and Lower Los Angeles River Grant Program
under the safe neighborhood parks, clean water, clean air, and coastal protection Bond Act
of 2000.
BACKGROUND
The State of California's Resources Agency (Agency) announced a competitive grant
program for the San Gabriel River Watershed, San Gabriel Mountains and Lower Los
Angeles River Conservancy (RMC). The program will be administered by the Agency, and
will provide funds for "open space, non -motorized trails, bike paths, and other low -impact
recreation uses and wildlife habitat restoration and protection." The State Bond Act of
2000, Proposition 12, will provide $13.9 million to cities located within the jurisdiction of
the RMC. RMC's jurisdiction includes the northern slope of the San Gabriel Mountains
including the portion of the Santa Clarita Valley south of Highway 14.
Upon approval of the resolution, a grant application will be submitted before the July 3,
2002 application deadline, consistent with the program guidelines. Approval of the
resolution will allow staff to submit applications for possible grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact associated with recommended action.
