SUBJECT: SUPPORT FOR SAUGUS UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT BOND
MEASURE E
DEPARTMENT: City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution in support of the Saugus Union School District General
Obligation Bond initiative, Measure E, which will be on the upcoming June 4, 2002 ballot.
BACKGROUND
The Governing Board of the Saugus Union School District has voted to place a measure on
the June 4, 2002 ballot that, if approved, will provide for the sale of general obligation
bonds in the amount of $48 million dollars. This would equate to an estimated tax rate of
$27.50 per $100,000 of assessed value, or for a home valued at $250,000, the assessed rate
would be approximately $68.75 annually.
These funds will be used to help fund the development of two schools, assist in modernizing
four of the District's oldest schools and provide renovations at all school sites, specifically,
in the areas of technology infrastructure and security. In the past eight years the Saugus
Union School District has experienced an average annual enrollment growth of
approximately 400 students and still growing.
In accordance with the ten-year Facility Master Plan adopted by the District, monies
provided by the bond measure would be spent building new facilities and upgrading
existing facilities to accommodate growth and advances in technology deemed vital by the
Governing Board. Specifically, current design capacity of the District is 7,850 seats and
current attendance is at 9,658, an overcrowding of 1,808 students. The District spends in
excess of $525,000 annually for relocatable classrooms to accommodate the surplus
students.
Schools in the Saugus Union School District are often recognized for their excellence both
State and Nationwide. This high standard of education demonstrated by the District is an
asset and a source of pride for the City of Santa Clarita and its residents. Continuing
support of the Saugus Union School District reinforces the high level of commitment the
